Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

The birth of Ava DuVernay took place on the 24th of August on the 24th of August, 1972, in Long Beach California. DuVernay learned to love art through her grandmother Denise. The aunt was on during the night shift as nurse, so she could follow her passion for art literature and theater throughout the day. DuVernay became enamored with the 1961 movie West Side Story after her aunt introduced it to DuVernay. DuVernay was instructed by her mom that art can be used to engage people. DuVernay was educated by her mother, who was a social sassy and encouraged DuVernay to show her creativity through art. DuVernay lived in Compton for most of her youth, however she spent every summer in the company of her extended family members located in Lowndes County Alabama. DuVernay's father was able to recall seeing the Civil Rights Movement's historic march across the Edmund Pettus Bridge near the town of Selma Alabama. Her summers in Selma, Alabama would influence her later on to create a film about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay finished Saint Joseph High School at Lakewood in the state of California in 1990. After graduating she attended an institution called the University of California Los Angeles which she graduated with qualifications in English as well as African American studies. DuVernay was a student at the college at the time she began to become attracted to the field of production for broadcast journalism. Her career began as an assistant to CBS News in the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay was assigned to the watch and search the home for a specific juror. The tasks that she had to perform left her dissatisfied and so, after deciding to not pursue journalism, she moved on to the field of public relations. DuVernay began working in a small studio as a Junior Publicist right after college. She started The DuVernay Agency, her company for public relations in 1999. Alongside PR, her agency also launched several lifestyle and promotional networks including The Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective, Urban Eye and HelloBeautiful.
